Interesting Faces, Colorful Wings
June 16 through August 26, 2007
Kerala is one of the most densely populated areas of India. Yet this state in the southern portion of the country enjoys a 91 percent literacy rate, excellent health care and the highest life expectancy and lowest infant mortality rate in India. It’s also blessed with natural tropical beauty.
The exhibition Interesting Faces, Colorful Wings opens in Fawick Gallery on June 16. It presents images taken in this populous area by two photographers who are also good friends: native Keralan Dr. Unni Krishnan Pulikkal and Clevelander Herbert Ascherman, Jr.
Ascherman first visited Kerala in 2005 to participate in an international convocation of more than 100 photographers. Immediately captivated, he returned in 2006 for 10 days. He toured the Keralan countryside and jungles, photographing what he saw while walking through rice fields and rubber plantations, boating miles of canals and visiting small villages. His approximately 30 images feature the people and places he encountered.
An equal number of photographs represent Pulikkal’s work. Pulikkal is a physician who took up photography as a creative outlet in 1998. He is also director of the Butterfly Art Foundation, a visual arts organization in Kerala. The exhibition features images of the brightly colored South Indian butterflies that have captivated his imagination since he was young.
