Members Preview Party for "RACE: Are We So Different?"

Museum members are invited to preview the "RACE: Are We So Different?" exhibit. Then hear world music and dance performances by Passport Project, Cleveland's multicultural arts organization. The Passport Project Global Dance & Music Collective will offer workshops for all ages in hand drumming and traditional dances from around the world. Enjoy complimentary global cuisine and beverages and cash bar. Not a member? Join now.

Community Conversation Featuring Marian Wright Edelman

Facing History and Ourselves and The Allstate Foundation present a Community Conversation Featuring Marian Wright Edelman. President of the Children’s Defense Fund and a best-selling author, Edelman examines how to make our nation and world safe and fair for all children. She also offers insights from her new book, The Sea Is So Wide and My Boat Is So Small. This event is part of a national speaker series sponsored by Facing History and Ourselves and The Allstate Foundation that explores issues of civic responsibility. This event is free. Presented in partnership with The Cleveland Museum of Natural History.

Educator's Workshop

This workshop uses the resource book Race and Membership and the "RACE: Are We So Different?" exhibit to examine questions of race and identity and their impact on American history. Participants will view the exhibit in addition to examining themes and classroom applications. Fee $50; limit 35 individuals. Sponsored by Facing History and Ourselves.

Urban Professionals Night

A special after work networking party engaging the more than twenty groups which cater to the young urban professionals across Northeast Ohio. The event will begin with networking across racial and generational lines. There will also be a Keynote Speaker who will discuss the changing face of America’s race and its impact on future generations and the workplace. Tickets, $15 each. Co-sponsored by Cool Cleveland, Cleveland365.com, Sankofa Fine Art Plus, the National Black MBA Association of Cleveland, and the Women of Color Foundation.

Community Health, Wellness and Fitness Fair
Sat, Oct 25, 2008, 10 am to 3 pm, Free

A full day devoted to the health and wellness of individuals and families. Individuals will be provided with information about various medical concerns that plague America today and be provided with information to improve their personal health. There will be various workshops, speakers and health related screenings for families. Special emphasis will be added to educate participants on the benefits of wellness and fitness. Attendees will have access to the medical and wellness resources which are available to them in them throughout the Museum. This event is free and open to the public.  Co-sponsored by Cuyahoga Community College, Kaiser Permanente, MetroHealth Cleveland, Neighborhood Progress Inc, and United Way of Greater Cleveland.

Diversity Professionals Day

A full day conference designed for local and regional diversity professionals. The conference will feature a series of workshops and breakout groups on the topics of race, inclusion and generational differences in the workplace. The conference will feature a keynote speaker, a panel discussion and breakout sessions. A Diversity Resource Corner will also be featured to expose diversity professionals to resources that will assist them in their day to day work.
This event will be a fee for service activity open to diversity and human resources professionals.

Exploring Race Lunchtime Series 
Mondays, October 20, 27 and November 3, 10, 2008, Noon to 1 pm  

Join us for a compelling four-part lunchtime series exploring the origins and manifestations of race and racism in everyday life by investigating race and human variation through the framework of science. Each week, a different professional will speak on race within the context of laws and customs of our nation, science, health and the living experience. Presentations will be informal and include discussion.

Gospel & RACE Collide at the House of Blues

Community Conversation Circles: Let's Talk About RACE

Gather at the Museum for an opportunity for individuals and groups to come together and discuss the topic of "RACE: Are We So Different?". Trained Facilitators will lead the community in a non threatening discussion that allows peers to discuss the topic of RACE. Conversation Groups will be divided as Adults, Teens and Children. Free with Museum admission.

RACE Community Day Forum | The American Dream and the 2008 Presidential Campaign: Have we Lived up to our Ideal?
Sat, Jan 3, 2009, 1 to 2:30 pm 

Sponsored by Heights Community Congress, the Forum will examine many of the ideas that were espoused about the American Dream, including the divergent views of America that were expressed by the candidates during the recent Presidential campaign. Panelists will examine the myth of the "Real American" and its meaning in terms of race, class, religion, and ethnicity. The panelists will also consider the question of whether Americans share a cultural identity. Participants can view the RACE exhibit following the Forum. Pre-registration before January 2: $7; At the door after January 2: $9.

RACE Community and Family Day: The Final Day Of "RACE: Are We So Different?"
Sun, Jan 4, 2009, noon to 5 pm

Come together as a community to celebrate the uniqueness that is Northeast Ohio through interaction with your colleagues, neighbors and friends. The day will feature genealogy workshops, storytelling, quilting, and a host of other interactive activities and entertainment for families and children. Come and contribute to a community art project that will represent the time "RACE: Are We So Different?" was in Cleveland as you view the exhibit before it moves to its next venue. Free with Museum admission.

RACE Night at The Cleveland Playhouse: "Mahalia: A Gospel Musical"

In collaboration with The Cleveland Playhouse, The Cleveland Museum of Natural History is offering discount tickets for "Mahalia: A Gospel Musical." Also enjoy a pre-performance reception.
